Up On The Roof
When I come home feelin' tired and beat
I go up where the air is fresh and sweet
I get away from the hustling crowd
And all that rat-race noise down in the street
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
The lyrics from this famous Drifters song so eloquently epitomize the breakneck pace of the city and the elusive refuge that only seems to exist if one rises above it.
In capturing city scenes I've found the rooftops to be my favorite vantage point, and as the lyrics say, "On the roof it's peaceful as can be and there the world below can't bother me". Up there, unhurried, I can take the time to compose, focus and shoot the images my mind conjures...and the breeze whispers its approval.
This series of birds-eye views were all taken "from the heights", well above street level, at twilight and at evening.
