BRIDGES
Bridges...immense, silent, brooding structures whose singular purpose is to provide conveyance from one point to another. So important is their function, their very name is synonymous with their action - a bridge bridges a gap.
Some bridges are spartan...others, utilitarian, ornate, decorative, even beautiful - but ALL are necessary. Most will stand for decades...others last for centuries. Whenever a bridge crumbles and falls, its imminent destruction is heartbreaking - a tragedy; its remnant a sad testament to a forgotten, bygone era.
My fascination with bridges began at the very early age of 4 when I first crossed the Bayonne Bridge...I was captivated. One of my first (and ongoing) photography projects was to capture images of bridges in all their architectural glory.
Bridges are (in my humble opinion) a testament to the ingenuity of Man, and one of the earliest indicators of his ability to overcome his environment.
