BRIDGES
These immense, silent, brooding structures have long held a fascination for me. One of my earliest memories is of crossing the Bayonne Bridge as a toddler at the tender age of 4...I was in awe at the sheer size of this mass of concrete, steel and asphalt.
My infatuation with these behemoths has carried on into adulthood, but now I have the ability to capture my vision of these architectural wonders thru photography, forever immortalizing their massive allure.
When photographing a bridge, I attempt to capture the essence of the structure from the vantage point of a child - from beneath, emphasizing its magnitude and power - seeking to evoke a sense of wonder...and who isn't amazed with a colossus looming overhead?
Some bridges are spartan...others, utilitarian, ornate, decorative, even beautiful - but ALL are necessary. Most will stand for decades...others last for centuries. Whenever a bridge crumbles and falls, its imminent destruction is heartbreaking - a tragedy; its remnant a sad testament to a forgotten, bygone era. Bridges are engineering marvels; a testament to the ingenuity of Man, and one of the earliest indicators of his ability to overcome his environment.
This series is my tribute to their distinction, their resilience and their lasting durability.
